Furnace Puff Back Clean Up
What is a furnace puff back? It is the discharge of soot in your home due to a faulty ignition switch in your heating system. The soot is black and sticky and causes a strong, smoke-like odor throughout your home. While more common with oil systems, a furnace puff back can occur with oil or gas, forced air, or hot water systems. When a puff back occurs, soot is spread to all surfaces within your home – drapes, bedding, furniture, walls, carpet, and contents. If the soot travels through your home's ductwork, the ducts must be cleaned and deodorized as well.

What causes puff backs in Long Island homes?
The most common cause for puff back is excess fuel in the bottom of the furnace and firebox or clogged orifices in the furnace burner nozzle. These defects result in delayed ignition or a substantial build-up of soot within the burner. Puff backs happen most frequently in old oil-fired furnaces and can also occur in a gas heating system. Additionally, in a forced hot air system, the ignition explosion can shake loose and blow out any soot or soil that has accumulated into the ductwork, further contributing to the severity of the loss. Puff back usually occurs when the furnace is turned on for the first time in the fall or during the start of cold weather.
What kind of damage can it do to Long Island homes?
Damage from puff back can appear in a wide variety of ways. For example, the damage may look like dust that reappears after cleaning or smearing on various surfaces, dark fingerprints that appear on almost every surface, soot webs that look like regular cobwebs but are darker, and soot around heating ducts and electrical circuits.
The cleaning process must begin immediately to prevent further damage and to limit insurance claim amounts. Within hours, the acid residue will stain grout, fiberglass fixtures, and Formica countertops. Appliances, vinyl windows, and furniture finishes will begin to discolor as well as. Within days, metals will become corroded and pitted, and walls will yellow permanently. Within weeks, crystal, glass, and china may become permanently damaged from etching. Carpet fibers will yellow permanently.
